Following a successful logo design in 2022 for DeathWrites Network the following year, I was commissioned by Dr Naomi Richards, Senior Lecturer in Social Science, and Dr Marian Krawczyk, Program Convenor, to design a logo for their academic research and teaching group, the Glasgow End of Life Studies Group.
Again, this was a challenging task, because it's very difficult to find images which represent dying, death and grief which are not too culturally specific (Richards & co research and teach on end of life care and customs in different countries and have students from around the world). nature based (dying leaves, flowers, trees) and we worry they are a little overused. Previously, the team were using a dandelion clock but they were looking for something more stylised and "a bit different from the standard fare", and were not keen on using hands in the logo or anything nature-based (such as dying leaves, flowers, trees).
Upon presenting them with a few concepts, we settled on the image on an hourglass, which underwent a few tweaks and finally was approved as the right logo for the Group.
