Deep Cuts
In 2014, I got invited to design graphics for Deep Cuts, a 6 x 30 minutes mystery-drama series from award-nominated production company Front Line Picture House (full cast and crew can be found here.) In 1993, the fictional and isolated woodland community of Freston is shocked to the core when nine-year-old Liam McFadden and his six-year-old brother George witness their father’s violent suicide. Almost twenty-one years later, Liam has become the most feared and violent man in the district and there isn’t a single person’s life he hasn’t affected. When the local police fail to take action, three young men decide to take the law into their own hands, with disastrous consequences that send new shock waves through the community… and soon everyone will be asking, ‘Where is Liam?’
I designed two beer brands, two cigarette brands, a Tequila brand, and a menu and placemats for Pondarosa Diner. Unlike in the commercial world, where the goal of a brand / product designer is to reach the highest possible target and sell as any items as possible, brands and products in a film, like all other set design elements, are to tell the story. Therefore, all the colours, imagery and typographical elements are carefully designed to communicate information about the characters and places, and build the atmosphere of the film.
